Leaders in Training Program

What is Leaders in Training?

Are you a high school student looking to get your volunteer hours?  Do you care about providing a quality camp experience for children in the Kingston community? Join ASUS Camps LIT (Leader in Training) program 2024!

ASUS Camps’ LIT program is open to students in grade 9-12 who want to gain valuable leadership experience in a day camp setting. This is a wonderful opportunity for students interested in arts and science, education, community work, leadership, and working with children.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are hardworking, team players

  • Are compassionate, kind, respectful and patient

  • Are eager to learn and adapt to new situations

  • Understand and respect the diverse backgrounds of our campers and fellow volunteers/staff

How does the ASUS Camps LIT Program work?

Our LIT Program is divided into two components, the learning component and the placement component. These components will take place during your chosen week(s). LITs are expected to volunteer during camp hours of their chosen week(s), Monday-Friday 9 am to 4 pm (excluding holidays) with an hour lunch break.

Additionally, the program requires volunteers to participate in one weekend of training (June 22nd and 23rd). On the training day LITs will work with directors to select a week or weeks to work as an LIT.  Both training and Camp will take place on Queen’s campus.

The Learning Component: During your chosen week(s) of summer you will participate in a workshop with camp directors focused on building lesson plans and preparing and running an activity for the campers. You will be learning about planning and running camp programming and will work together to plan, prepare and run an activity for the campers. You will also receive feedback from counsellors and directors.

The Placement Component: A majority of the LIT’s week will be spent working with counsellors to provide a fun and safe experience for campers. LITs will be placed with camp groups to act as assistant counsellors. They will be mentored by ASUS counsellors, helping activities run smoothly (ie helping campers complete crafts, participating in games), entertaining campers, and helping campers prepare for activities (ie putting on sunscreen, filling water bottles).

Reasons to participate in ASUS Camps’ LIT program:

  • Gain valuable experience for college/university and/or job applications

  • Opportunity to receive references/letter of reference from camp directors

  • Complete 44 volunteer hours with one week as an LIT (5-day week + training day)

  • Participate in fun camp activities and field trips!
